Have you ever walked around the edge of a cruise ship out in the middle of the ocean at night? It’s absolutely beautiful with all the stars above and that deep, dark water beneath. But, if you’re like me, your mind can quickly shift from that beauty to, “Wow, that water is really dark, you can’t see anything in it, and for this big old ship to be on it, it’s got to be really deep…if I fell over, they’d never find me!” Our mindset can be quickly changed by what is unseen or unknown – like what’s under the water…or COVID-19. As we think about the current health care crisis, it can cause a lot of anxiety or even depression. And if you have kids, it can become overwhelming to manage you and your family’s increasing anxiety.
As you walk through this time with your kids, remember to be honest with them and let them openly express their fears. This is a great time to help them understand how to bring their fears to God and cry out to Him. Just as we see in Mark 4:35-41, when life’s storms happen, they can truly scare us, just as the disciples feared for their lives from the raging dark waters. However, Jesus was not surprised (in fact, He was so relaxed, He was asleep). He was not worried or shaken. Truth is, He was in control the whole time, all the disciples needed to do was call on Him. This is our time to do the same.
