Do you ever feel thrown left and right by the waves of life?
As a new resident of the Orlando area, I have come to learn the joy of thunderstorms, and I use the word joy very loosely.
It feels like a predetermined meeting around 3 pm: clouds slowly form, the sky darkens, and then flashes come through, as if the whole sky were a camera taking pictures of the ground. Aside from the symphony of sounds during those thunderstorms, they are often accompanied by strong winds, which, in the Florida heat and humidity, are a welcome sight. (It's interesting that sometimes things that can cause real damage are welcome as a counter to another reality, but that is a conversation for another time.)
Life can be a real thunderstorm. Sometimes unexpected; sometimes seen early in the forecast. Its waves shake our lives to and fro, like boats in a harbor, while the emotional rollercoaster of not knowing what we might hit, or how it might affect us, rolls on.
Honestly, sometimes it feels like it might be easier to just let go. But in that place, the goodness of God's grace comes through His word, reminding me that even when life's waves intensify, I am anchored in Him. You see, the anchor of my life doesn't break; it's firm and stable.
Hebrews 6:19-20 points to this personal hope in the Gospel; it works in the deepest part of who we are, our soul. "We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."
What a gift that the anchor of our life is not only tied to our souls but knows their deepest intricacies. It knows me fully, by name, and says, "There is no storm that will ever break you from my grasp, because my work is not conditional on the storms, but eternally fixed in who I am”. No matter how hard the waves pull, Jesus has gone before me, covered me with his victory and strength, so even if the boat is battered, nothing can sink it in the eternal blueprint of life. I may be battered by the reality that pulls me, but in the end, what truly sustains me in that storm is not me or what I can do, but what has already been done for me at the top of Calvary on that wooden cross.
So, if you are in a storm, abide in the truth of the Gospel, in its complete work to which you are firmly tied; even when all seems to fail, know that it never will.
Soli Deo Gloria.
Soli Deo Gloria
God bless!
