Have you ever wondered why some Christians seem to experience God in powerful ways while others feel stuck ins spiritual mediocrity? The answer might lie in understanding what God has already placed within you and your willingness to develop it.
What are Spiritual Gifts?
According to 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, every believer receives spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit. These aren’t just natural talents or abilities we’re born with - they’re supernatural endowments given for a specific purpose: to build up the church and help others come to know Jesus.
The passage reveals that there are “varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit” and that “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” This means if you’ve accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you have been given at least one spiritual gift.
The Problem with Our Perspective on Gifts
We often look at gifted people - Olympic athletes, brilliant students, or talented musicians - and focus only on their end results. We see the gold medal performance but ignore the countless hours of training, the early morning workouts, and the sacrifices made to develop their abilities.
The same mistake happens with spiritual gifts. We want the benefits of the gift without the burden of developing what has been deposited in us. Just because the Holy Spirit has placed something within you doesn’t mean it will automatically manifest without effort on your part.
The Parable of the Talents: A Call to Investment
Jesus addressed this issue directly in Matthew 25:14-30 through the parable of the talents. In this story, a master gives different amounts of money (talents) to three servants before going on a journey. Two servants invest what they’re given and double their returns, while one buries his talent in the ground out of fear.
When the master returns, he praises the two who invested: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” But to the one who buried his talent, he says, “You wicked and slothful servant... you ought to have invested my money.”
What Does it Mean to Invest Your Gifts?
Investing your spiritual gifts means taking your life and pouring it into others. It’s about service - using what God has given you to benefit other people and advance His kingdom. When we invest our gifts in others, something supernatural happens: they multiply, and we experience God in deeper ways.
You Are Never More Like Jesus Than When You Serve
In Matthew 20:25-28, Jesus turned worldly thinking upside down. While earthly leaders exercise authority over others, Jesus taught that “whoever would be grateful among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave.”
Jesus modeled this perfectly, saying, “Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” When we serve others, we reflect the heat of christ and experience Him in ways we never could by keeping our gifts to ourselves.
Overcoming Fear and Taking Action
The servant who buried talent did so because he was afraid. Fear is often what keeps us from developing and using our spiritual gifts. We worry we’re not qualified enough, experienced enough, or good enough.
But remember: if God has called you to something, He will equip you for it. The same Spirit who gave you the gift is the one who empowers its use. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start - you just need to be willing to take the first step.
Practical Ways to Develop Your Gifts
If you’re wondering how to begin developing your spiritual gifts, consider these areas of service:
The key is to start somewhere. Don’t wait until you feel completely ready - that day may never come.
The Multiplication Effect
When you invest your gifts in others, God multiplies the impact. Just like the servants in the parable who doubled their talents, your willingness to serve creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond what you can see.
This generation desperately needs encouragers, teachers, and servants who will invest in their lives. When you step into your calling, you’re not just developing your own gifts - you’re helping others discover theirs too.
Life Application
This week, commit to taking one concrete step toward developing the spiritual gifts God has placed within you. Don’t be a “one gift wonder” who buries what God has given. Instead, find one way to invest in someone else’s life through service.
Whether it’s volunteering in children’s ministry, joining a greeting team, helping with meals, or simply encouraging someone who’s struggling, take action. Remember, you are never more like Jesus than when you serve.
Ask yourself these questions:
Don’t let fear keep you from experiencing the joy and fulfillment that comes from using your gifts for God’s glory. He has equipped you for a purpose - now it’s time to discover what that purpose is.
