In Ephesians 5:1-20, the Apostle Paul provides powerful guidance for how Christians should live. Paul uses the metaphor of “walking” throughout this section to illustrate different aspects of the Christian life.
What Does it Mean to Walk in Love?
Paul begins this section with a call to “be imitators of God as beloved children and walk in love” (Ephesians 5:1-2). Just as children naturally imitate their parents, believers should imitate their Heavenly Father.
When we walk in love, we follow Christ’s example. Jesus “loved us and gave himself for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Our love should similarly leave a fragrance of self-sacrifice. When people interact with you, do they sense that Christ has made a difference in your life?
What Love is Not
Paul quickly contrasts godly love with its counterfeits in verses 3-6:
“But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”
The Roman and Greek cultures were immersed in immorality. Similarly, our culture today celebrates many things that oppose God’s standards. Paul calls believers to a radical change—to live differently from the surrounding culture.
This includes watching our speech. Are your words blessing others or degrading them? Paul reminds us that thanksgiving should characterize our speech instead of crude or foolish talk. As Jesus taught, “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34)
How Do We Walk in the Light?
The second type of walk Paul describes is walking in the light (verses 7-14). He reminds believers: “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (v.8).
When you walk in darkness, you stumble and must feel your way around. Similarly, when you live in sin, you’re constantly hiding, afraid someone will discover what you’re doing. But when light comes in, it reveals all darkness and frees you from that burden.
The Power of Living in the Light
Living in the light produces good fruit (v.9) and reveals what is pleasing to God (v. 10). Though exposure can be uncomfortable, it allows us to experience God’s mercy and grace. As 1 John 1:7 affirms, “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
What Does it Mean to Walk Wisely?
The third walk Paul describes is walking wisely (verses 14-16). He urges believers to “look carefully then you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”
This means being alert to opportunities God brings your way. As one businessman wisely noted, “Opportunities only come once. If you don’t take the opportunity, it’ll be missed.” Walking wisely means recognizing the evil in our world while seizing every chance to demonstrate God’s greatness. It means being intentional about how we use our time and resources for God’s kingdom.
How Can We Walk with Clarity?
The final walk, though not explicitly called “walking,” is implied in verses 17-21—walking with clarity. Paul writes, “Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
Instead of being controlled by substances like alcohol that blur our judgement, believers should be “filled with the Spirit.” The Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells within every believer, giving us everything we need to live godly lives in this corrupt world.
The Results of Spirit-Filled Living
When we walk with clarity through the Spirit’s power, we:
Our lives become songs of praise that encourage others and glorify God. As Zephaniah 3:17 beautifully puts it, God Himself “will exult over you with loud singing.”
Life Application
This week, consider how you’re walking in each of these four areas:
Ask yourself: What one area of my “walk” needs the most attention right now? What specific step can I take today to walk more closely with Christ in that area?
Remember, God is still chipping away at the marble of your life, revealing the masterpiece He created you to be. Your part is to walk in step with Him—in love, light, wisdom, and clarity.
