Speaking God’s Truth with Love

Have you ever wondered how God has uniquely gifted you to serve His kingdom? Over the next seven weeks, we’ll explore the seven spiritual gifts outlined in Romans 12, starting with the first and foundational gift: prophecy. Understanding your spiritual gifts isn’t just about personal growth—it’s about discovering how God wants to use you to impact others for His glory.

What Does it Mean to Be Spiritually Gifted?

Every believer has been given spiritual gifts by God’s grace. These aren’t thrift store gifts—God gives only the best. Your giftedness encompasses how you think, feel, and act according to how God has uniquely wired you. While some people are introverts and others extroverts, we all have God-given personalities that influence our natural motivations. As Christians, we also receive one or more spiritual gifts that shape our supernatural motivations for ministry.

Everyone is Gifted for God’s Glory

You might not feel gifted, but you are. God wants to use your gifts to declare His greatness, and each day we should display these gifts in ways that point people not to ourselves, but to Him. In the church, everybody is somebody, and every member plays a vital role in God’s eternal plan.

The greatest ability God wants from us is our availability. He doesn’t always call the qualified, but He qualifies the called. When you sense God drawing you into something, you must respond because that’s His voice whispering to your spirit about what you should be doing.

Understanding the Gift of Prophecy

When most people hear “prophecy,” they think of predicting the future. However, biblical prophecy is much more practical and immediate. Here’s a clear definition: prophecy is the divine enablement to reveal truth and proclaim it in a timely and relevant manner for understanding, correction, repentance, and edification.

Why Prophecy Comes First

Paul mentions prophecy first among the seven gifts in Romans 12 because God’s Word is central to everything. While Old Testament prophets spoke literally from God, today those with the gift of prophecy expose sin and deception in others for the purpose of reconciliation. They see truth that others often fail to see and can redirect people’s paths through God’s Word.

The Goal of Prophecy

The goal isn’t to divide Christians but to speak God’s truth in difficult and sinful moments, helping others see truth and respond in obedience. As 1 Corinthians 13:2 reminds us, even prophetic powers mean nothing without love. Those with this gift must guard against exaggeration and ensure they communicate only what God has directed them to share.

Characteristics of Someone with the Gift of Prophecy

How They Express Themselves

People with the gift of prophecy have several distinctive traits:

  • Quick to express themselves - They sense needs and feel compelled to speak into situations
  • Quick impressions of people - They can walk into a room and immediately sense what’s happening
  • Alert to dishonesty - They can detect when someone or something isn’t what it appears to be
  • Open about their faults - They’re willing to share their own struggles and inadequacies
  • Wholeheartedly involved - They’re completely convinced of truth and fully committed
  • Loyal to truth over people - They’re willing to speak difficult truths even when it’s uncomfortable
  • Willing to suffer for what’s right - They understand that speaking truth doesn’t always go well
  • Persuasive in defining truth - They have a way of putting truth into words others can understand

Key Personality Traits

Those with the gift of prophecy tend to be:

  • Discerning in their thoughts
  • Compelling in their beliefs
  • Uncompromising in their standards
  • Outspoken when necessary
  • Authoritative in their leadership
  • Convicting in their message
  • Confronting when needed

Important Cautions for Those with the Gift of Prophecy

Potential Pitfalls to Avoid

While the gift of prophecy is powerful, it comes with important cautions:

  1. Exposing without restoring - Don’t just point out problems; help with solutions
  2. Jumping to conclusions - Take time to observe and listen before speaking
  3. Reacting harshly to sinners - Remember to speak truth with love and grace
  4. Being unforgiving - Don’t write people off who struggle with sin
  5. Condemning themselves - Avoid being overly critical of your own failures
  6. Being impatient - Allow time for people to grow and change
  7. Cutting off people who fail - Remember that grace can reach anyone
  8. Dwelling on negatives - Balance correction with encouragement
  9. Rejecting feedback - Stay humble and teachable
  10. Speaking without love - Remember that people may reject the message if it’s not delivered with love

The Power of Speaking Truth in Love

When controlled by the Holy Spirit, the gift of prophecy becomes a powerful tool for reproof, rebuke, and exhortation. It helps people see how out of balance their lives might be and points them toward Jesus. This is what preaching and teaching are all about—elevating God’s Word so people understand who they are in light of who God is.

Build Up the Body of Christ

According to Ephesians 4, God gave various gifts to equip the saints for ministry and build up the body of Christ. The goal is unity of faith and knowledge of Jesus, leading to spiritual maturity. Those with the gift of prophecy help keep everyone’s eyes on the mission of following Christ.

Life Application

This week, consider how God might be calling you to speak truth into someone’s life with love. The gifts God has given you are not for having, but for giving. They fulfill their value when utilized for the benefit of others.

Take time to honestly assess whether you might have the gift of prophecy. Do you find yourself naturally discerning truth from falsehood? Are you compelled to speak into situations where you see people heading in the wrong direction? Do you have a heart for helping others see God’s truth clearly?

Questions for Reflection:

  • How can you better balance speaking truth with showing love in your relationships?
  • When has someone spoken prophetic truth into your life that helped redirect your path?
  • What areas of your life might God be calling you to be more available for His use?
  • How can you use your unique gifts this week to point someone toward Jesus rather than toward yourself?

Remember, you have the opportunity to change the skyline of the lives God has placed in your path. Whether through the gift of prophecy or another spiritual gift, God wants to use you to make an eternal difference in His kingdom.
