How to Live a Simply Blessed Life

In a world filled with complaints and negativity, what would it look like to live differently? What if we could put on spiritual clothing that transforms not only how we see ourselves, but how others experience us? The Apostle Paul gives us a beautiful picture in Colossians 3:12-17 of what it means to wear “garments of thanksgiving” - spiritual clothing that demonstrates God’s work in our lives.

What Does it Mean to be Simply Blessed?

Being simply blessed isn’t about having perfect circumstances or an easy life. It’s about recognizing that everything good in our lives flows from God through Jesus Christ. When we understand this truth, it changes how we approach each day and interact with others.

The Garment of Grace: Seven Threads that Transform

Paul uses the metaphor of putting on clothes to describe our spiritual transformation. Just as we carefully choose what to wear each morning, we must intentionally put on spiritual garments that reflect our identity in Christ.

Thread 1: Compassionate Hearts (Mercy)

A heart of compassion means having genuine sensitivity and heartfelt sympathy for other’s needs. When you see someone struggling, you don’t just feel bad - you’re moved to action. This might mean leaving a larger tip for a struggling server or taking time to help a neighbor in need.

Thread 2: Kindness

Kindness goes beyond basic politeness. It’s being a vehicle of divine thoughtfulness - going out of your way to make someone else’s day better. It’s acting charitably and benevolently toward others, just as God has done for us.

Thread 3: Humility

True humility isn’t thinking less of yourself - it’s thinking of yourself less. It’s an attitude of self-esteem that has no room for arrogance or pride. Often, humility comes through brokenness, through experiences that teach us our need for God and others.

Thread 4: Meekness

Meekness means yielding your rights for the benefit of others. It’s choosing to put someone else’s needs before your own convenience. This doesn’t happen naturally - especially in traffic or when we feel wronged.

Thread 5: Patience (Long-suffering)

Patience is a spirit that doesn’t lose composure with difficult people. It’s putting up with others who drive us crazy - and we all have those people in our lives. When someone prays for patience, God often provides opportunities to practice it!

Thread 6: Forbearing with One Another

Forbearing means giving “extra grace required” to those around us. It’s recognizing that someone’s difficult behavior might not be about you, but about something they’re struggling with internally.

Thread 7: Forgiving Each Other

Forgiveness is an ongoing element of our spiritual journey. As Jesus told Peter, we forgive “seventy times seven” - meaning it’s a continuous practice, not a one-time event.

Love: The Belt hat Holds It All Together

Paul says that above all these qualities, we must “put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Love is like a belt that holds all the other spiritual garments in place. Without love, all our other efforts fall apart.

Romans 13:10 reminds us that “love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” When we love others as we love ourselves, our entire perspective changes.

The Garment of Peace: Letting Christ Be the Umpire

Paul uses a fascinating athletic metaphor when he says to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” The word “rule” can be like an umpire making calls in a game. Just as an umpire settles disputes on the field, the peace of Christ should be the umpire of our hearts, settling internal conflicts and guiding our decisions.

When we face difficult choices or conflicting emotions, we can ask: “What would bring peace in this situation? What would Jesus do?” This divine peace helps us make decisions that honor God and serve others.

The Garment of Praise: Why Christians Sing

The early church was known as a singing church. A Roman governor once described Christians as people who “meet at dawn and sing a hymn to Christ as to God.” Music has always been central to Christian worship because it expresses the joy and hope that comes from knowing Jesus.

Why Do We Sing?

We sing because it serves multiple purposes:

  • It witnesses to the truth of our faith and strengthens others
  • It confesses the inner life of the believer and soothes the soul
  • It awakens our spirit to embrace deeper meditation on God’s goodness

Whether through ancient psalms, traditional hymns, or contemporary spiritual songs, music helps us express what words alone cannot capture.

The Garment of Endeavor: Doing Everything in Jesus’ Name

Paul concludes by saying, “whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” This means bringing every action and word under the test of Jesus’ presence.

Two Simple Tests

Before acting or speaking, ask yourself:

  • Can I do this and call on the name of Jesus?
  • Can I do this and ask for Jesus’ help?

If the answer is no, then perhaps we need to reconsider our approach.

Life Application

This week, examine your spiritual wardrobe. How well does your garment of thanksgiving fit? Do you need to take it to the cleaners - asking God to forgive areas where you haven’t shown mercy, patience, or kindness?

Consider these questions:

  • What impressions do people have when they encounter you?
  • When people leave your presence, do they feel like they’ve encountered the garment of thanksgiving?
  • What specific changes need to take place in your life so you can walk in greater gratitude to God?

Choose one of the seven threads (compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forbearing, or forgiveness) that needs attention in your life. This week, intentionally practice that quality in your interactions with family, coworkers, and strangers. Remember, everything you do should flow from gratitude for what Jesus has done in your life.

When people ask why you’re so kind or patient or forgiving, let your answer always point back to Jesus: “It’s because of what Jesus has done in my life.” This is how we wear our garments of thanksgiving in a way that draws others to Christ.
