Chosen, Redeemed, and Guaranteed

The book of Ephesians reveals God’s magnificent plan for humanity - a plan that was established before the foundation of the world. As we explore the first 14 verses of this powerful letter, we discover profound truths about our identity in Christ and God’s eternal purposes.

Who is at the Center of Ephesians?

The central theme of Ephesians is God Himself. Throughout this passage, Paul consistently points us back to God as the author, arranger, and finisher of our salvation. Jesus carried out the Father’s plan and the Holy Spirit seals us.

This letter written by Paul likely between 49-64 AD while imprisoned in Rome, opens with a greeting that reveals the transformation in Paul’s own heart. Once known for his firmness and demanding nature, we now see sweetness flowing from him as he writes: “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

What Does it Mean to be Chosen By God?

In verses 3-4, Paul reveals our first spiritual blessing: we are chosen by God. “He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him in love.”

Remember how it felt to be chosen for a team on the playground? Some of us know the pain of being the last one standing, unchosen. But in God’s kingdom, He chooses everyone who wants to be part of His plan.

This raises questions about election and predestination - topics theologians have debated for centuries. But here’s a simple way to understand it: “Those who are willing are always the elect, and those who will not are not the elect.” In other words, if you choose Jesus, you’re part of the elect.

God’s choice of us wasn’t an emergency measure after sin entered the world. If God is omnipotent, He knew creation would fall. Jesus was always the solution to save humanity from sin.

How Does God Make Us Holy and Blameless?

God desires that we would be “holy and blameless” before Him. Holy means to be different and separate. The Christian community should be identifiable in this world - if you’re blending in completely, you may not be living as distinctly as God intends.

To be blameless points back to the Old Testament sacrificial system, where only animals without blemish were acceptable for sacrifice. Through Christ’s blood, God sees us as without blemish, despite our past sins and failures.

As Philippians 2:15 says, we are to be “blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted world.” The world hasn’t changed - it’s still crooked and twisted. But the church needs to shine as light within it.

What Does It Mean to be Adopted By God?

In verses 5-6, Paul reveals that God “predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ.” Adoption isn’t just a legal transaction - it’s receiving a new identity and becoming part of a new family.

Just as an adopted child takes on the family name and identity, we take on Christ’s identity when we’re adopted into God’s family.

God desires everyone to be saved. As 1 Timothy 2:3-5 states, God “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” His adoption plan wasn’t limited to a select few but extended to all who would receive it.

What Gifts Does God Give to Believers?

In verses 7-8, Paul describes the incredible gifts God gives to believers:

  • Redemption through Christ’s blood
  • Forgiveness of sins
  • Wisdom and insight

These gifts flow from “the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us.” The fountain of God’s grace never runs dry - it remains inexhaustible, providing grace upon grace. Once our sins are forgiven, we gain a different understanding of life. The Holy Spirit gives us wisdom to see things from God’s perspective. As Colossians 1:9 says, we can be “filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.”

What Is the Mystery of God’s Will?

Verses 9-10 speak of “the mystery of his will” that God has now made known. Sometimes God withholds certain truths until we’re ready to receive them - just as parents don’t tell their children everything at once.

This mystery, hidden for ages, is now revealed: Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:26-27). God’s ultimate plan is “to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” Christ is the unifying factor for all creation.

God is the steward of all time, knowing exactly when all things will come together. Our responsibility is to steward our time well and prepare ourselves for Christ’s return.

How Does God Guarantee Our Salvation?

In verses 11-14, Paul reveals God’s guarantee to believers. Think about it - the God of creation offers a guarantee to broken sinners! When you purchase something new, it comes with a warranty. Similarly, God provides a guarantee with salvation.

What is this guarantee? “You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it.” The Holy Spirit is God’s down payment, assuring us of our eternal future.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 confirms this: God “has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” And Romans 11:29 assures us that “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” - no one can take them away.

Life Application

As we reflect on these profound truths from Ephesians 1:1-14, here are some ways to apply them to your life this week:

  • Appreciate God’s Spirit within you. Take time each day to acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life. Thank God for this incredible gift and guarantee.
  • Live as one who is chosen and adopted. How would your daily decisions change if you constantly remembered your identity as God’s chosen, adopted child?
  • Be visibly different. If Christians should be identifiable in this world, how might you need to adjust your lifestyle, speech, or priorities to reflect your holy calling?
  • Seek spiritual wisdom. Ask God to activate the wisdom and insight He has given you through His spirit. Spend time in His Word and prayer, allowing Him to shape your perspective.
  • Give all praise to God. Remember that the ultimate purpose of your salvation is “to the praise of his glory.” How can you direct more glory to God this week?

Ask yourself: Am I living with the confidence of someone who has been chosen by God? Do I appreciate the guarantee of the Holy Spirit in my life? How can I better reflect my identity as God’s adopted child in my daily interactions?

Remember, all of these blessings are not because of anything we’ve done, but because of God’s lavish grace poured out through Jesus Christ. To Him be all the glory!
