In a world that seems increasingly hostile to Christian values, believers need to understand that we are engaged in a spiritual battle. The reality is that we now live in what was once considered a Christian nation that has become post-Christian. This means we are effectively living behind enemy lines, and we need to be prepared.
What Does Spiritual Warfare Look Like Today?
The evidence of spiritual warfare surrounds us daily. Consider the alarming statistics: three high school students in Seminole County committed suicide in one week alone. The Church of Satan openly declares Halloween as their night when people “touch darkness.” These aren’t isolated incidents—they’re symptoms of a larger spiritual battle. Even more concerning, Islamic messages reading “convert, repent or die” have been found etched at the base of America’s largest granite monument in Massachusetts—a monument that celebrates our nation’s Christian heritage with words like faith, morality, education, law, and liberty carved around its base.
Why Are We Losing Ground in This Battle?
Many Christians are unprepared for spiritual warfare for several reasons:
The Western church has become too comfortable and lackadaisical about understanding what’s happening in our world. We’ve retreated into our domes of safety while the battle rages outside.
How Do We Fight This Spiritual Battle?
Recognize the Source of Our Strength
Paul commands us to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might” (Ephesians 6:10). This isn’t optional—it’s a command. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is available to every believer. We’re not fighting in our own strength but in God’s mighty power. Remember David facing Goliath. When Saul tried to put his armor on David, it didn’t fit. David had to fight in God’s strength, not man’s equipment. He declared victory “in the name of the Lord” and defeated the giant with one stone.
Understand the Nature of the Battle
This battle occurs in spiritual realms, not physical ones. We’re not wrestling against flesh and blood, but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers of darkness, and spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12).
The enemy has schemes designed to take us down, but Satan cannot defeat us unless we let him. As Isaac 54:17 promises: “No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed.”
Put on the Full Armor of God
God has provided complete spiritual armor for this battle.
The Belt of Truth - Truthfulness and God’s truth are essential for battle. When Jesus was tempted, He responded each time with “It is written.” When temptation comes your way, respond with Scripture.
The Breastplate of Righteousness - This guards your heart. Your righteousness in Christ protects you from Satan’s attacks.
Gospel Shoes - Be ready to share what God has done in your life. This brings peace and gives you opportunities to advance the kingdom.
The Shield of Faith - Complete reliance upon God. Faith means total dependence on Him and willingness to do His will. Remember, God always provides a way of escape from temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13)
The Helmet of Salvation - This protects your mind and gives you security in Christ. You have the Holy Spirit speaking to you constantly, like having a communication system built right in.
The Sword of the Spirit - The Word of God is your only offensive weapon. The Spirit makes God’s Word effective as you speak and receive it.
What Can We Expect in This Battle?
The enemy knows his time is limited and his destiny is already determined. This makes him more desperate and aggressive. We can expect the battle to intensify, but we also know that greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world.
Life Application
This week, commit to putting on the full armor of God daily. Start each morning by consciously choosing to be strong in the Lord’s strength, not your own. When temptation or spiritual attack comes, respond with Scripture just as Jesus did.
Examine your spiritual weapons. Is your Bible gathering dust on the coffee table, or are you actively using God’s Word as your sword? Are you calling in air support through consistent prayer, or are you trying to fight this battle alone?
Remember that you’re not defenseless. You have the God of the universe walking beside you. No matter what unfolds in the days ahead, you can trust God because His Word is true.
