In a world filled with uncertainty and constant change, we need to understand who we’re truly worshipping. This isn’t just about following a good teacher or philosopher - we’re encountering the eternal God of the universe who stepped into our world.
What Does “I AM” Really Mean?
Before diving into the Gospel of John, we need to understand the significance of God’s name. In Exodus 3:13-14, when Moses asked God for His name, God responded: “I am who I am.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you’“ (Exodus 3:14).
This phrase “I AM” in Hebrew is Yahweh - God’s personal name. When you see “LORD” in all capital letters in your Bible, it’s translating this same divine name. This isn’t just any lord or master - this is the eternal, self-existing God who spoke the universe into existence.
Why Did God Come Down to Our Level?
Think about parenting for a moment. When children are small, they spend most of their time on the floor - playing, crawling, exploring. As adults, we don’t particularly enjoy getting down on the floor. It hurts our knees and backs. But if we want to spend time with our children, if we want them to know us and for us to know them, we get down on their level.
God loves you so much that He was willing to do something infinitely more costly. He left His perfect kingdom to get “in the dirt” with us. And unlike the minor discomfort we experience getting on the floor with children, it cost Jesus everything to come to our level.
The I AM is Revealed
Jesus as the Eternal Word
John 1:1 declares: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This “Word” isn’t just language or communication - it’s God’s complete revelation of Himself.
The phrase “in the beginning” intentionally echoes Genesis 1:1, pointing us back to creation itself. But this goes even deeper - it tells us that Jesus existed before time began. When God created the world, He wasn’t just creating space and matter; He was creating time itself. Jesus, as the eternal Word, exists outside of time.
Understanding the Trinity
Here’s where our minds struggle: Jesus is both “with God” and “is God.” How can this be?
This mystery is beyond our complete understanding, and that’s exactly the point. We don’t want to worship a God we can fit neatly into a box or put on a shelf. That would be an idol, not the true God. The God we worship is indescribably great, beyond our full comprehension.
The I AM Is Rejected
Despite Perfect Revelation
John 1:10-11 tells us: “He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him”.
The people had the best preacher in John the Baptist - a man who recognized Jesus as the Messiah even before birth. More than that, they had Jesus Himself performing miracles and revealing God’s character directly. Yet they still rejected Him.
The Problem Isn’t the Message
The issue wasn’t the clarity of the message or the ability of the messenger. The problem was closed hearts. People chose to reject what was clearly evident before them. The same choice faces us today - we can either open our hearts to receive Him or continue in rejection.
The I AM Can Be Received
The Key to Eternal Life
But there’s hope! John 1:12 provides the answer: “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
The key to eternal life isn’t a thing - it’s a person. It’s Jesus Himself. When we receive Him and believe in His name, we’re not just getting access to heaven; we become children of God with full inheritance rights.
Grace Upon Grace
John 1:16 promises: “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace”. This means unlimited, inexhaustible grace. No matter how far you’ve fallen or what you’ve done, God’s grace is more than sufficient. You’ll never reach the end of His forgiveness and love
The I AM Became Flesh
God’s Ultimate Sacrifice
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
Jesus didn’t just visit earth temporarily - He took on full humanity. He experienced every human limitation: hunger, thirst, fatigue, pain. He learned language, experienced growth, and submitted to all the vulnerabilities of human existence. This wasn’t beneath His dignity; it was the ultimate expression of His love.
Why Flesh Was Necessary
Jesus had to become human because He came to save humans, not angels. Your salvation required an earthly work, but it couldn’t be accomplished by any earthly person. Only God in flesh could live the perfect life we couldn’t live and die the death we deserved to die.
Life Application
Understanding that Jesus is the great I AM should transform how you approach life’s challenges. When everything falls apart, you’re not going to someone for advice - you’re going to God Himself. When you pray, you’re not hoping someone might pass along your message; you’re speaking directly to the Creator of the universe who loves you enough to get “in the dirt” with you.
This week, remember that the same God who spoke the world into existence cares about your daily struggles. He didn’t just come to earth to save you and then leave you on your own. Like a parent who gets down on the floor with their children, He came to your level not to leave you there, but to pick you up and carry you with Him.
Questions for Reflection:
The eternal I AM stepped into time so that you could step into eternal life with Him. The question isn’t whether He’s worthy of your trust - the question is whether you’ll open your heart to receive Him.
