What Does It Mean to Be Born Again

In John chapter 3, we encounter one of the most important conversations in all of Scripture. A religious leader named Nicodemus approaches Jesus with a burning question that every person must eventually face: How can I get to heaven? Jesus’ response reveals a truth that challenges everything we might think we know about salvation and eternal life.

Why Do We Need to Be Born Again?

The Problem with Self-Improvement

Many people approach their spiritual life like someone trying to fix up an old broken-down truck. They think if they just work a little harder, be a little better, or try to improve themselves, they’ll eventually be good enough for heaven. But this misses the fundamental problem entirely.

We are not just slightly damaged goods that need minor repairs. We are completely broken spiritually - our “engine is shot, our transmission is blown, and our tires are about to bust wide open.” No amount of self-improvement can fix what’s wrong with us at our core.

Nicodemus: The Religious Leader Who Wasn’t Sure

Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a teacher, and a ruler of the Jews. If anyone should have been confident about getting to heaven, it was him. He was part of the religious elite, highly respected, and devoted to following God’s law. Yet something inside him knew he wasn’t good enough.

This should give us pause. If someone as religiously accomplished as Nicodemus couldn’t be sure of his salvation based on his works, what hope do any of us have through our own efforts?

Jesus’ Shocking Response

When Nicodemus came seeking spiritual guidance, Jesus didn’t give him a to-do list or tell him to try harder. Instead, Jesus said something that must have stunned him: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” - John 3:3.

Jesus wasn’t offering Nicodemus steps for improvement. He was telling him that his entire approach was wrong. Getting to heaven isn’t about law - it’s about grace.

What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?

Physical Birth vs. Spiritual Birth

Nicodemus was confused by Jesus’ words. How could someone be born again? Jesus explained that just as we experienced physical birth to enter this world, we must experience spiritual birth to enter God’s kingdom.

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” - John 3:6.

Physical birth gives us physical life, but only spiritual birth can give us spiritual life. This isn’t something we can accomplish through our own efforts - it’s something that must be done to us and for us by God.

The Wind Illustration

Jesus used the wind as an illustration: “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” - John 3:8

You can’t see the wind, but you can see its effects. Similarly, you can’t see the Holy Spirit, but you can see the changed life He produces. Being born again is God’s initiative, not our accomplishment.

How Does the New Birth Happen?

The Bronze Serpent Story

Jesus referenced an Old Testament story to explain how salvation works. In Numbers 21, poisonous snakes were killing the Israelites. God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Anyone who looked at it would be healed - it was that simple.

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life” - John 3:14-15.

Just as the Israelites had to look to the bronze serpent to be saved from certain death, we must look to Jesus on the cross to be saved from spiritual death.

The Most Famous Verse in the Bible

This brings us to John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” - John 3:16.

The word “believes” here doesn’t just mean intellectual agreement. It means trust - complete dependence on Jesus alone for salvation. It’s like putting on a parachute and jumping out of a plane, trusting that the parachute will save your life.

What About Good Works?

Works Don’t Save Us, But They Show Our Salvation

Jesus concluded His conversation with Nicodemus by addressing the role of good works: “But whoever does what is true comes to light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” - John 3:21

Good works don’t earn our salvation, but they prove our salvation. When someone is truly born again, their life will show evidence of that spiritual transformation. We don’t serve God to get to heaven - we serve God because we’re grateful that He’s already secured our place there.

The Two Religions of the World

There are really only two religions in the world: Christianity and everything else. The dividing line is grace versus works.

Every false religion, including false Christianity, is based on the idea that you can earn your way to heaven through your actions. True Christianity teaches that salvation is entirely by grace - God’s unmerited favor toward us.

If you’re trusting in anything you can do to get to heaven, even if you’re adding it to Jesus, you’re not trusting in grace alone.

Can You Know for Sure?

Here’s a simple test: Do you know that you’re saved? If your answer is “I don’t know” or “I hope so,” then you’re likely still trusting in your works rather than God’s grace.

When salvation is based on grace alone, you can know with certainty where you’ll spend eternity. It has nothing to do with how good you are and everything to do with how good Jesus is.

Life Application

The message of John 3 challenges us to examine the foundation of our faith. Are you trying to patch up your old spiritual “truck” with good deeds and religious activities, or have you accepted that you need a completely new vehicle that only God can provide?

This week, honestly evaluate what you’re trusting in for salvation. If there’s any doubt in your mind about your eternal destiny, don’t wait. The gospel isn’t about fairness - if it were fair, we’d all go to hell because that’s what we deserve. The gospel is about grace, and that grace is available to you right now.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I trusting in Jesus alone for my salvation, or am I depending on my good works, church attendance, or religious activities?
  • Can I honestly say I know I’m going to heaven, and if so, what is that confidence based on?
  • If I died today, what would I tell God about why He should let me into heaven?

Remember, you can’t earn salvation, but Jesus has already paid the full price. All you need to do is put your complete trust in Him - put on the parachute and jump out of the plane. His grace is sufficient, and His parachute always works.
